Top Games of 2019

December 15, 2019

These are my top five games of 2019. I thought I would continue the tradition.

5. Super Mario 3D Land

Super Mario 3D Land

Every Nintendo system has at least one big Mario game, and this is the one on 3DS. (Or 2DS in my case). It is a 3D Mario game, but not like Super Mario 64. Mostly the worlds are not big and open. They are smaller and mostly linear, but still full of great secrets. It's like they took a 2D Mario game and combined it with Mario 64. So you still get the great 3D platforming and controls, but it is more of a "get to the end of each level" like in the 2D games. There are a ton of great levels, the platforming is excellent, and overall it is a great Mario game.

4. Beat Saber

Beat Saber

The idea is simple, you get a lightsaber in each hand, weird music starts playing and colored blocks start flying towards you along with to the beat of the music. You have to slash the blocks with your lightsabers and dodge some other stuff, all in virtual reality! The game is totally cool. Whoever came up with the idea is a genius, it is so fun. It is also kind of a workout, on expert mode the blocks fly at you really fast. They've added a bunch of new DLC songs over the past year and the game is still going strong. A must-have for anyone with VR.

3. Pokemon Trading Card Game

Pokemon TCG

That's right, the Pokemon cards everyone collected as kids in the 90s. It turns out it is still going strong 20 years later, and the online game is free. You can play with pre-built decks you buy from the store (or just buy them in the game for free) or play with any other cards from packs. The user interface is pretty basic, but that is a good thing, the game just works. No fancy bells or whistles. There are always people playing and it is a fun way to test out ideas or just kill some time.

2. Superhot

Superhot VR

I thought VR was a gimmick at first, just an expensive thing with a few half-baked games. Superhot changed all of that. In Superhot, bad guys are trying to kill you, with fists or guns. You have to kill them first--and time only moves as you move. So if you move at full speed, time does too. But if you slow down and move slowly, you can be like Neo in The Matrix, slowly dodging bullets as the pass by you. It is so awesome and one of my all-time favorite video games. A must-buy for anyone with VR. Full review here.

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Black Ops 4 made the list last year too, but I have played it way more in 2019. I think it is hands down the best Battle Royale game out there currently. The tight Call of Duty controls and the excellent map give it the edge. They have added modes and new stuff consistently over the year. My favorites have been Hardcore mode (I wish they would bring it back!) and the smaller Alcatraz Island level. I still play this game all the time even though the new Call of Duty is out. I hope they bring a Battle Royale mode to the new game, but I'm still liking Black Ops 4 a lot. Easily my most-played Call of Duty ever.
